Matthew 1:1-17 (WEB)

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham became the father of Isaac. Isaac became the father of Jacob. Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers.

Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron. Hezron became the father of Ram.

Ram became the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon. Nahshon became the father of Salmon.

Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse.

Jesse became the father of King David. David the king became the father of Solomon by her who had been Uriah’s wife.

Solomon became the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam became the father of Abijah. Abijah became the father of Asa.

Asa became the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram. Joram became the father of Uzziah.

Uzziah became the father of Jotham. Jotham became the father of Ahaz. Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah.

Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh. Manasseh became the father of Amon. Amon became the father of Josiah.

Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.

Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim. Eliakim became the father of Azor.

Azor became the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim. Achim became the father of Eliud.

Eliud became the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan. Matthan became the father of Jacob.

Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,

the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,

Today we see part of Jesus' family tree. On both his mother's and father's side, we see King David. The path from King David to his mother's father, whose name was Heli, is completely full of people who never appeared in the Bible, except for David's son, Nathan. In contrast, there are more famous people on the path from King David to Joseph, the man who only close family would have known was not the one who fathered Jesus. So, both the actual bloodline of Jesus, through his virgin mother and the line that his community would have respected, were from King David. This is important because so many prophecies said that the savior, who is the anointed one, would be from King David's family.

The concept of anointing someone with oil was like a European King or Queen getting a crown on their head. The Hebrew and Greek words for describing this anointing tradition is where the word Messiah and Christ come from. When the Bible talks about Jesus Christ, it is talking about how Jesus, a descendant of King David, is also appointed to be king. Even before Jesus was born, some people knew he was appointed to be king. We will read later how much trouble it caused Jesus, even as a baby, to be known for this.

Today's key verse portion is, "Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham," (from Matthew 1:1). And the Old Testament verse portion is, "A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit," (from Isaiah 11:1). Today's questions are, "Why is David before Abraham in the first verse of Matthew? Why does Matthew list several males who are not direct ancestors and several direct female ancestors? Why does Matthew only list 41 names? Do you think the difference between Matthew and Luke is because Matthew is giving Joseph's line and Luke is giving Mary's father's line?" Finally, today's prayer starts like this: God, I want to truly believe what the Bible says about the Word; today please…
